About St Martin's Church, Colchester
St Martin’s Church, Colchester stands near the town hall in central Colchester, Essex. It serves an Antiochian Orthodox congregation connected with the Archdiocese covering Britain and Ireland, having been acquired by the local St Helen’s Chapel parish by January 2022. Still consecrated and in regular religious use, the church is designated Grade II*.
Its Norman nave and incomplete tower survive from the twelfth century. Fourteenth-century work introduced the side aisles, crossing arms and sanctuary. Flint rubble forms the walls, which contain reused Roman masonry, while tiles cover the roofs. Damage sustained by the tower during fighting in 1648 was never remedied. Nineteenth-century repairs exposed the curved timber ceiling over the sanctuary, and a major conservation programme concluded in 2003. Notable details include a Green Man carved at the crown of the sanctuary roof arch and a pair of glazed decorative tile panels.
