About St Nicholas
St Nicholas is a Grade II* listed medieval church on Franciscan Way in Ipswich, Suffolk. Once the church of a parish within the town’s southern ward, it is cared for by the Ipswich Historic Churches Trust. The Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich now operates it as a venue for conferences, close to offices used by the diocese and its bishops.
The building dates to about 1300 and received a substantial new interior scheme in 1849. Its tower originated in the fifteenth century but was reconstructed in 1886. The church contains five bells: Miles I Graye of Colchester cast one in 1630, while Henry Pleasant of Sudbury made the other four in 1706. All are mounted in an oak structure from around the same year. Peyton Ventris, a judge and politician who lived from 1645 to 1691, was buried in the churchyard.
