About St Mildred's Church, Ipswich

St Mildred’s Church, Ipswich formerly served a parish based around the Cornhill in Ipswich, Suffolk. It was named for Mildred, the Thanet abbess whose death occurred during the eighth century. The building did not remain solely devoted to worship, and its later role was largely connected with the civic administration of the town.

Its origins date from soon after Mildred’s lifetime. By the early 1300s, the congregation had become so small that, in 1309, the parish lost its place within Ipswich’s municipal governing body. During the following century, the premises were adapted for administrative work, although one chapel remained set aside for worship. This limited religious function continued up to the Reformation.
