About St Matthew, Ipswich
St Matthew, Ipswich is an active Church of England parish church on Portman Road in Ipswich, Suffolk. With origins in the medieval period, it continues to serve its parish and is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
The earliest known record of the church is from the twelfth century, while most of the surviving structure was developed during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Further extensions were added in several stages during the nineteenth century, when the building served the barracks in Ipswich as a garrison church. A notable feature is its sixteenth-century font, which has eight decorated panels illustrating episodes connected with Mary and the baptism of Christ. The font was funded by John Bailey, who was the vicar at that time.
