About St Mary's Church, Washbrook
St Mary’s Church, Washbrook, is a redundant Anglican church standing among fields around three miles west of central Ipswich, Suffolk. Now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust, it is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
Parts of the fabric survive from the 12th century, although much of the church belongs to the 14th century. Edmund Buckton Lamb restored it in 1866 and added the baptistry on the north side. Flint rubble, brick and stone dressings form the structure, while the roof carries patterned red and black tiles. The plan includes a nave, chancel, south porch, vestry, baptistry and a three-stage western tower with a brick battlement. Inside, notable medieval details include carved chancel arcades, canopied stalls, a sedilia, piscina and Easter sepulchre. The 15th-century octagonal font is supported by shafts and four carved lions, with angels, roses and foliage beneath its bowl.
