About St Mary's Church, Kersey
St Mary’s Church, Kersey, is an active Church of England parish church in Kersey, Ipswich, Suffolk. Dating principally from the medieval period, it is protected as a Grade I listed building. The church belongs to a benefice shared with the neighbouring parishes of Aldham, Elmsett, Hintlesham and Chattisham.
Although the main building dates from around 1350, its earliest surviving fabric is from the 12th century. Constructed from flint and stone on raised ground south of the village, it has a north aisle completed in 1335 and a four-stage tower finished in 1481 after work was interrupted by the Black Death. The chancel was reconstructed in 1862, when a vestry was also added. Inside are carved roof timbers, fonts from the 12th and 15th centuries, a medieval lectern and chancel screen, and a restored fragment of the rood screen depicting saints and monarchs. The tower contains eight bells, while the church also houses a two-manual pipe organ made by Bishop & Son.
