About St Mary le Tower, ipswich

St Mary le Tower, Ipswich, is a Church of England church on Tower Street in Ipswich, Suffolk. Now designated Ipswich Minster, it serves as the town’s civic church and holds Grade II* listed status. The new title was granted in January 2025 to reflect its growing contribution to the local community.

A church has stood on the site since at least 1086, when it was recorded in the Domesday Book. Ipswich’s town charter was composed in its churchyard in 1200. Although the building has medieval origins, much of the present structure resulted from a major reconstruction between 1860 and 1870, designed by Richard Phipson and financed by banker and philanthropist George Bacon. Notable features include memorial brasses, a substantial three-manual pipe organ derived from a 1690 instrument by Renatus Harris, and a ring of twelve bells, first completed in 1865.
