About St Mary at the Quay Church
St Mary at the Quay Church stands in Ipswich’s former dockland area in Suffolk. This Grade II* listed medieval building is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. Regular services ceased in the 1950s, but River Church has used the building since 2021 as part of the Holy Trinity Brompton church-planting network.
The present church was constructed from around 1450 to 1550, replacing a 13th-century predecessor. Built of flint with stone detailing in the Perpendicular style, it has aisles, transepts, a clerestoried nave and a western tower with diagonal buttresses, decorative flushwork and a battlemented parapet. Inside are a carved double hammerbeam roof, a restored 15th-century octagonal font, and the tomb and memorial brass of Ipswich merchant Henry Tooley. Wartime bombing between 1940 and 1942 destroyed most of the stained glass. Following long-standing flood damage and structural decline, an extensive restoration was completed in 2016.
