About St Mary at Stoke
St Mary at Stoke is a Church of England parish church in Ipswich’s Over Stoke area. It occupies a noticeable site below rising ground, not far from Stoke Bridge and the centre of Ipswich. Now designated Grade I, the church once served a largely agricultural parish whose population grew markedly after the railway reached this part of the town.
Worship at this location can be traced to the tenth century, and the first structure was probably wooden. The present building dates from about 1350 and combines a modest medieval core with a much larger section added to William Butterfield’s design in 1872. What was originally the nave became the northern aisle. Above it is a medieval hammer-beam roof featuring shaped wall plates, carved figures and angels holding shields. These angels were installed during the Victorian period to replace earlier carvings destroyed by iconoclasts. A piscina from the medieval period also survives, and Richard Hall Gower lies in a burial vault inside the church.
