About St Margaret's Church
St Margaret’s Church is a Church of England church in Ipswich, Suffolk. Standing north of the historic town centre, it serves as a reminder of the area’s medieval development. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building, recognising its exceptional architectural and historic significance.
Augustinian canons from the neighbouring Holy Trinity Priory established a church here around 1300 as Ipswich’s population expanded beyond the town’s northern defences. Most of the present structure belongs to the fifteenth century and dates from about 1450. Its notable hammerbeam roof is also from that period, with paintings introduced during the late seventeenth century after the Glorious Revolution. The tower was reconstructed in the nineteenth century. An organ made by J. W. Walker & Sons in 1859 was acquired from Holy Trinity Church in Bedford in 1981, then cleaned, repaired and retuned in 2012–13.
