About St Lawrence Church
St Lawrence Church stands on Dial Lane in central Ipswich, Suffolk. This Grade II* listed building dates from the 15th century and is no longer an active parish church. After the parish was made redundant in the early 1970s because it had no members, the building passed into the care of Ipswich Historic Churches Trust. Following extensive renovation, it reopened in July 2008 as a community centre with a restaurant and gallery.
The tower’s upper stage was reconstructed in 1882 by the London firm Barnes and Gaye. Its Victorian flint decoration combines floral and geometric designs and incorporates the initials S and L. The tower houses five medieval bells, regarded as the earliest surviving complete ring of five. Four were made around 1450 and the fifth around 1480, retaining their original clappers. Removed in 1985 when the tower became unsafe, they were returned to use in September 2009 after structural work, installation of a steel frame and specialist overhaul.
