About Church of St Peter
The Church of St Peter stands between College Street and Star Lane in Ipswich, Suffolk, close to the waterfront and south of the town centre. It is one of the medieval churches of the historic borough and is protected as a Grade II* listed building. Following restoration, it reopened as a heritage centre in 2008 and is cared for by the Ipswich Historic Churches Trust.
The site may have held Ipswich’s earliest church, with a church dedicated to St Peter recorded in the Domesday Book. It stood near a ford across the River Orwell. In 1297, Edward I’s daughter Elizabeth of Rhuddlan married John I, Count of Holland, in the earlier building. The present church dates from 1460 and contains a Tournai font made around 1170–90. An Augustinian priory dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul once occupied six acres beside it, and its canons used the chancel while parishioners worshipped in the nave. A Heritage Lottery grant supported restoration in 2006.
