About Church of St Clement
The Church of St Clement in Ipswich, Suffolk, is a redundant medieval church and a Grade II* listed building. It is among twelve surviving medieval churches in the town, half of which were no longer used for regular worship by the 1970s. Ipswich Historic Churches Trust assumed responsibility for the building in the twenty-first century.
The earliest surviving fabric dates from the 14th century, followed by further work during the 15th century. Extensive Tudor-period changes included the tower, whose construction was financed by local wool traders. In 1860, Frederick Barnes oversaw substantial alterations to the chancel. For around five centuries, the congregation was largely drawn from maritime and trading families, including sailors, shipbuilders, dock workers and merchants. People associated with the church include merchant and mariner Thomas Eldred, brewer Thomas Cobbold and naval architect Thomas Slade, who was buried in the churchyard in 1771.
