About Church of St Mary, Woolpit
The Church of St Mary, Woolpit serves the Church of England parish of Woolpit, near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. The building has Grade I listed status in recognition of its exceptional historic and architectural interest.
Although its origins are medieval, the present fabric largely belongs to the 1400s. Perpendicular Gothic predominates, while the chancel and southern aisle survive from the previous century. Notable details include an ornate two-tier hammerbeam roof, numerous carved medieval bench ends alongside Victorian copies, and a substantial porch constructed between 1430 and 1455. Flint flushwork enriches the outside of the clerestory, and an original eagle-shaped lectern survives from the early Tudor era. Lightning brought down the former tower and spire in 1852 or 1853; Richard Phipson designed their nineteenth-century replacements. Before the Reformation, a richly decorated image of the Virgin attracted pilgrims, among them Henry VI on two occasions.
