About St Peter's Church, Wickham Bishops
St Peter’s Church, Wickham Bishops, stands near Witham in Essex. No longer used as a parish church, it is both a scheduled monument and a Grade II* listed structure. The Friends of Friendless Churches assumed responsibility for it in 1975, and stained-glass artist Benjamin Finn has occupied it as a workspace since 1994.
The building dates to the eleventh century and may initially have served the Bishops of London, owners of Wickham Bishops manor by 1086. Its walls incorporate flint fragments, puddingstone, septaria, reused Roman tiles and brick, while red tiles cover the roof. A nave and chancel form the main body, alongside a south porch with a gable and a timber-clad bell structure to the west. Repairs were undertaken around 1850, though another parish church was later erected elsewhere. Subsequent additions include oak window frameworks, an altar carved by Rory Young and Nicholas Hague’s figure of Saint Peter. Thirteenth-century geometric wall designs found in 2007 have received conservation treatment.
