About Church of the Holy Innocents
The Church of the Holy Innocents is a Church of England church in Bures, Suffolk. Dating from the medieval period, it is protected as a Grade I listed building.
The earliest parts are thought to have been constructed around 1140, possibly for Simon de Beauchamp after he received property in northern Essex from King Stephen. Render covers walls formed from rubble incorporating flint and tile. The circular tower and nave belong to the original structure, while the chancel may also be contemporary. Alterations to the chancel took place during the 14th century, and it was lengthened by about one metre in 1869, when the tower gained a roof. A brick porch and its southern entrance date to the 16th century. Inside are a 15th-century oak rood screen, stained glass created by Mary Lowndes in 1895, and a chamber organ made by George Pike England.
