The Church of St Mary is an active Church of England parish church in Prittlewell, a suburb of Southend-on-Sea in Essex. Designated Grade I, it ranks among the county’s oldest churches and is also its largest. Worship continues in the building, with community activities taking place in the church hall. It also has links with two nearby Church of England schools.
Saxon founders established the church as a chapel in the seventh century, with its foundation traditionally dated to around 650. Its present scale developed through successive additions made between the twelfth and seventeenth centuries. These centuries of expansion transformed the early chapel into the substantial historic church that survives today.
