About Church of St Clare
The Church of St Clare is the Church of England parish church serving Bradfield St Clare in Suffolk. It remains the village’s active Anglican place of worship and is recognised for its architectural and historic importance through its Grade II* designation.
The earliest parts of the church were built in the twelfth century, followed by alterations during each of the next three centuries. A restoration was completed in 1874. The church also has links with the religious and political divisions of the Civil War period. In 1643, parishioners made several complaints against the rector, Paul Gosnold, including allegations about his preaching, conduct and neglect of parish duties. After the case was considered by a Suffolk committee in March 1644, the Earl of Manchester ordered his removal. Samuel Crossman was subsequently appointed to the parish, while Gosnold later preached to the Royalist parliament at Oxford.
