Lichfield Cathedral stands in The Close in Lichfield, Staffordshire. Dedicated to St Mary and St Chad, it is a Church of England cathedral, serving as the Bishop of Lichfield’s seat and the central place of worship for the diocese. Services are held each day, and the building is protected at Grade I.
A cathedral was consecrated on this site in 700, although the present church was largely constructed from the early thirteenth century to about 1320. Built in Decorated Gothic style from locally quarried red sandstone, it is distinguished by three spires, including a central spire rising to 77 metres. The building sustained extensive damage during the Civil War and subsequently underwent several restorations, including substantial nineteenth-century work by George Gilbert Scott. Notable features include sixteenth-century Flemish painted glass in the Lady Chapel and the eighth-century Lichfield Gospels, displayed in the Chapter House.
