About Christ Church

Christ Church is a Church of England parish church in Leamonsley, south-west Lichfield, serving Leamonsley, Sandfields and Lower Sandford Street. Consecrated in 1847, it remains an active place of worship and is designated Grade II*. The adjoining primary school was also founded in 1847.

Construction began in 1844 on land donated by Richard Hinckley, with Ellen Jane Hinckley meeting the building costs. Thomas Johnson of Lichfield designed the red sandstone church in the Decorated Gothic Revival style. Its original arrangement included the nave, chancel and western tower, which housed a bell made by C. G. Mears in 1845. Matthew Holding enlarged the building in 1887, adding transepts, a Lady Chapel, an organ chamber and a choir vestry. Notable details include stained glass by Hardman & Co and Charles Eamer Kempe, John D. Batten’s Pre-Raphaelite paintings above the chancel, and three Grade II listed Hinckley family tombs behind the church.
