About Wadsley Church

Wadsley Church is an active Church of England parish church on Worrall Road in Wadsley, Sheffield, around three miles north-west of the city centre. Unusually, it has no dedication to a saint. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building.

Built from 1832 to 1834 for £3,500, the church was designed by Joseph Potter in the Gothic style, with lancet arches and cast-iron piers. Sisters Ann and Elizabeth Harrison financed its construction and stipulated that it should have no central aisle. A serious fire on Easter Day 1884 destroyed the roof and badly damaged the interior, including the organ and seating. Repairs were completed later that year. A choir vestry was added in 1897, while extensive work in 2002 and 2003 altered the balconies and introduced new facilities and a baptistry. The churchyard contains graves of people killed in the Great Sheffield Flood of 1864, as well as a Gothic memorial to the Harrison sisters.
