About Derby Baptist Chapel
Derby Baptist Chapel is a former place of worship in St Mary’s Gate, Derby, Derbyshire. The chapel began serving its congregation in 1841, with its final acts of worship taking place during September 1937. Its decorative iron gates were subsequently moved to Derby Cathedral.
The congregation originated in 1791, when a baptism took place on 21 August, and used premises in Brook Street from 1802. Once its numbers had risen to about 500, it moved into a larger building created from the Osborne family’s mansion, a house dating to around 1750. William Evans MP sold the property to the Baptists for £4,000 in 1841. Nicholson installed an organ in 1897; J. H. Adkins relocated it in 1939 to the Baptist church in Broadway, Derby.
