About St Oswald's Church, Kirk Sandall
St Oswald's Church, Kirk Sandall is a redundant Anglican church near Doncaster in South Yorkshire. Dedicated to the Northumbrian king and saint, it is protected at Grade II* and cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. The building is open to visitors, while exhibitions and occasional services are organised with local support.
A church stood here by 1086, and the present building dates largely from the 12th century, following its recorded foundation in 1101. Later work took place during the 14th and 16th centuries, with restorations completed in 1864 and 1934. Built from rubble stone and dressed limestone, it combines Norman nave arcades with a Gothic chancel and the Perpendicular Rokeby Chapel. Notable details include possible Anglo-Saxon masonry, a Norman font, 16th-century stained glass and several Rokeby family memorials. The west tower, erected in 1828 and reduced in height in 1935 for safety, houses a bell cast in 1690.
