About Church of St Mary of the Purification
The Church of St Mary of the Purification is an active Church of England parish church on Main Street in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Dating partly from the fifteenth century, it is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
The medieval church is represented today by its surviving western tower. The remainder was reconstructed in two main phases, first by Rhodes of Barlborough in 1739 and later by Colvin in 1839. The building is faced in ashlar and covered by a lead roof. Two clock faces on the tower look east and west along Main Street. In the churchyard, a model made in 1963 depicts the earlier building. The former pipe organ was replaced in 2012 by a specially designed electronic instrument housed within the existing carved casing. The church is also associated by tradition with the burial of Will Scarlet, commemorated by masonry from the previous church.
