About Saint George's Church
Saint George’s Church stands on Saint George’s Drive in the Meadows district of Nottingham. It remains an active Church of England parish, with regular Mass and Sunday worship. Recognised for its architectural and historic importance, the church is protected as a Grade II listed building.
Construction began with the laying of a foundation stone in July 1887. Richard Charles Sutton planned the nave, which was consecrated in June 1888. George Frederick Bodley later created the chancel design; this part was finished and consecrated in 1898. Cecil Greenwood Hare was responsible for the larger Lady Chapel, added during 1914 and 1915. The west window, conceived by Burlison and Grylls in 1927 and fitted in 1938, portrays Saints Michael and George. Six windows along the north aisle show English saints. The organ, made by J. W. Walker & Sons, was dedicated in 1895 and subsequently moved into a purpose-built chamber.
