About St Saviours in the Meadows, Nottingham
St Saviours in the Meadows, Nottingham is an active Church of England parish church on Arkwright Walk in The Meadows, Nottingham. It is protected as a Grade II listed building for its architectural and historic significance.
The parish was created from St Mary’s, Nottingham, after a small mission chapel could no longer serve the area’s growing population. John Jackson, then Bishop of Lincoln, laid the foundation stone on 28 September 1863, and the nave opened for worship the following year. Richard Charles Sutton designed the building, which was financed by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and constructed by Nottingham builder John Barker for about £3,000. Planned for 750 worshippers, it has a 74-foot nave with aisles, an eastern chancel flanked by a vestry and organ chamber, and a nave rising 46 feet. Frederick Bakewell designed the vicarage added in 1867, while Thomas Wright altered the eastern end in 1913.
