About St John the Baptist
St John the Baptist is a Church of England parish church on Church Street in Royston, Barnsley, South Yorkshire. It remains in active use and belongs to the Sheffield diocese. The church has held Grade I listed status since 1966, recognising its exceptional historic and architectural interest.
A church stood here by the twelfth century, serving an extensive parish that included several nearby settlements. Much of the present structure dates from rebuilding during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Built from local sandstone, it has an aisled five-bay nave, a chancel with adjoining chapels, a northern porch and a three-stage western tower. The tower includes a projecting oriel above the entrance, where tradition records that a lamp helped travellers crossing the marshy Dearne Valley. Medieval features include octagonal nave piers, carved timber roofs and a heraldic stone font. George Fowler Jones oversaw extensive restoration from 1867 to 1869.
