About All Saints
All Saints is the Church of England parish church serving Darton, in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. It belongs to the Diocese of Leeds and remains a place of parish worship. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building, reflecting its national architectural and historic importance.
A church was recorded on this site by 1150, when a Norman building was established under local manorial lords. The present church largely dates from a substantial rebuilding by the friars of Monk Bretton Priory. Completed in 1517, it was designed in the Perpendicular Gothic style to provide more room for the growing parish. Several medieval cross-marked grave slabs were incorporated into its walls and floors. Surviving features include the outline of an anchorite’s cell roof, the base of the former Norman font and steps once leading to a rood screen. The Beaumont Chapel contains family memorials, including rare cast-iron grave slabs.
