About St Mary's Church, Cromford

St Mary’s Church, Cromford is an active Church of England parish church in Cromford, near Matlock in Derbyshire. It is protected as a Grade I listed building and shares its parish with Holy Trinity Church in Matlock Bath.

Designed by Thomas Gardner for people employed at Richard Arkwright’s Cromford mill, the present church replaced a much older chapel and was completed between 1792 and 1797. Henry Isaac Stevens extensively altered the Georgian building in 1858–59, adding an apsidal chancel and tower, reshaping the windows, and introducing a new roof and battlemented parapet. Alfred Octavius Hemming painted the interior walls in 1898, the same year that stained glass and six tubular tower bells were installed. The paintings were restored in 2002. A pipe organ made by William Hill dates from 1859. Sir Richard Arkwright’s remains were transferred here in 1797, and other members of his family were later buried at the church.
