About St Peter's Church
St Peter’s Church is a Church of England parish church in central Portishead, within the Bristol area of Somerset. It stands on Church Road South, between the town’s north and south Church Roads, and remains in active use. The building received Grade I protection in 1952 and has connections with local Christian primary education.
The present church was erected in 1320 where an older church had previously stood. Work undertaken across the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries shaped its Perpendicular Gothic appearance. Rising approximately 29 metres, the tower has four stages, inset buttresses and a parapet pierced with openings, making it a prominent feature of Portishead. A vestry was built in 1828, alterations followed in 1978 and 1979, and a garden was laid out around the millennium. Within the burial ground are Second World War graves for three naval servicemen and an airman.
