About St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church is an active Church of England place of worship in Portbury, Somerset, near Bristol. Located on Church Lane, it serves the local parish within a shared benefice that also includes Pill and Easton in Gordano. The building has Grade I protection for its special architectural and historic importance.
The church originated during the 1100s and was enlarged and modified in the following century. Surviving details include an entrance in the Norman style and a substantial porch built during the 1400s. The Berkeley Chantry holds graves connected with the Berkeley family from about 1190. Major renovation was undertaken from 1870 until 1875, including the addition of iron heating equipment. Six bells hang in the tower for change ringing, several produced by the Bilbie founders of Chew Stoke. A separating floor inside the tower was reinstated in 2012.
