About St John the Baptist

St John the Baptist is an active Church of England parish church on High Street in Keynsham, near Bristol, Somerset. Serving the town as an Anglican place of worship, it is recognised for its historic and architectural importance with Grade II* listed status.

Built around 1270, the stone church was closely connected with Keynsham Abbey before the monastery closed in 1539. Its southern aisle and porch were added in about 1390, while the chancel was reconstructed in 1470. After a storm brought down the spire in 1632, a replacement tower was erected and further repairs followed during the mid-17th century. Major Victorian restoration included renewed roofing, windows and nave arches. Historic furnishings include a font, pulpit and brass chandeliers. The organ, first installed in 1847, has since been enlarged and repositioned, while the tower contains bells made between the 16th and 18th centuries.
