About St. John’s Church
St. John’s Church is a Church of England parish church on Queen’s Road in Bristol, Somerset. It serves the parish established for South Clevedon and is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
The church was founded after population growth led to the creation of a separate ecclesiastical parish in 1876. Sir Arthur Elton funded the church and vicarage, appointing William Butterfield as architect. Construction began with the laying of the foundation stone in October 1876, and the finished building was consecrated in April 1878. Its Gothic Revival design uses locally quarried stone, Bath stone details and a tiled roof. The plan includes a nave, aisles, chancel, transepts, vestry and south-west tower, which now contains six bells. Notable interior features include tiled floors and walls, marble work in the chancel, stained glass by Heaton, Butler and Bayne, and an organ made by Henry Willis & Sons. A further vestry and porch were added in 1883–84.
