About St Bridget's
St Bridget’s is a Church of England church in Chelvey, close to Brockley in the Bristol area of Somerset. It honours the Irish holy woman Brigid of Kildare and is recognised for its exceptional historic and architectural importance with Grade I listed status.
Dating to the twelfth century, the church retains a Romanesque entrance on its southern side and an eight-sided baptismal font. The Tynte chapel contains a carved Purbeck stone panel from around 1250 to 1275, portraying an unidentified medieval knight with a spear and the sheath of his sword. Beneath it stands an altar table from the Jacobean period. Beside the pulpit is a copy of a sermon timer formed from an iron-framed glass filled with sand. The burial ground has a 1.5-metre cross upon an eight-sided plinth, crowned by an ornament installed in 1877. After serious water damage in the later twentieth century, fundraising launched in 2008 paid for restoration work, updated illumination and another organ.
