About St. Bartholomew's Church

St. Bartholomew’s Church is a Church of England parish church on The Street in Bristol, Somerset. It serves within the combined benefice of Blagdon and Compton Martin, under Chew Magna deanery and Bath archdeaconry. Its national heritage significance is recognised through Grade I listing.

Dating principally from the thirteenth century, this compact medieval building was extended during subsequent periods. Inside, the seating is movable rather than arranged as permanent pews. Historic furnishings include a square-bowled stone font from the 1200s and a Jacobean preaching pulpit. A copy of Erasmus’s Paraphrases, secured by a chain and dated 1552, is also kept there. The east window contains glass painted by Belgian artist Jean-Baptiste Capronnier in 1877. Surviving traces of an old fives court can be found immediately north of the building.
