About St. Andrew's Church

St. Andrew’s Church is an active Church of England parish church on Church Lane in Backwell, near Bristol in Somerset. It serves a parish within the united benefice of Backwell, Chelvey and Brockley, in the Portishead deanery. The historic building received Grade I listed status in 1961.

The present church largely originated in the 1200s, when its nave, chancel and side aisles were constructed. Alterations and extensions followed between the 14th and 17th centuries. Its prominent western tower, built during the 1400s, rises to 31 metres, while the rood screen dates to the early 1500s. An adjoining building providing offices and space for social use was completed in 1984. The churchyard contains a medieval cross, a restored memorial crucifix to local airman Pat Garnett, and two Second World War graves.
