About Holy Trinity
Holy Trinity is a Church of England parish church in Abbots Leigh, in the Bristol area of Somerset. Together with Leigh Woods, Abbots Leigh forms a parish and benefice in Bristol Diocese. The church remains in parish use and holds Grade II* protection for its architectural and historic importance.
Mostly dating from the fifteenth century, the building follows the Perpendicular Gothic tradition, with possible surviving fabric from the thirteenth century. An early Saxon religious retreat or modest chapel may once have occupied the spot. Fire caused serious damage in 1848, leading to extensive reconstruction, though the earlier chancel and tower were retained. The stone structure includes a slate nave roof, aisles on both sides, a porch to the south and a vestry. Its three-level western tower has angled supports, a battlemented top and six bells. William Bilbie cast three of them in 1781. Memorials inside include one for Sir George Norton, while a medieval eight-sided cross survives outside.
