About Church of St Margaret, Queen Charlton
The Church of St Margaret, Queen Charlton is a Church of England place of worship in Queen Charlton, Somerset, near Bristol. It forms part of Keynsham’s ecclesiastical parish in the Bath and Wells diocese, although Queen Charlton is included in Compton Dando civil parish. The building is recognised at Grade II* for its special historic and architectural importance.
The present structure originated towards the end of the twelfth century and once had links with Keynsham Abbey. By about 1200, it also possessed a separate complex of religious structures. Work undertaken in the thirteenth century changed the building, with further restoration carried out during the fifteenth. Of its initial cross-shaped layout, the northern arm alone remains. A two-level tower rises above the crossing, strengthened by angled supports and decorated with gargoyles, pinnacles and a perforated arcade along the parapet. Inside, four crossing arches rest against Norman-style columns. The village green also contains a medieval cross, relocated during commemorations for Queen Victoria’s Jubilee.
