About St Peter
St Peter is an Anglican parish church on Church Road in North Newton, near Bridgwater, Somerset. It is within the Alfred Jewel group of parishes and the Bath and Wells diocese. Designated Grade II*, the church has belonged to a parish independent of North Petherton since 1880.
William of Erleigh transferred the North Newton chapel to Buckland Priory in 1186. The tower, arranged over two levels, may have Anglo-Saxon origins; changes were made to it in 1635. All other parts were reconstructed during 1885. The layout comprises a central nave and chancel, flanked by an aisle to the north and another to the south. Among the surviving interior fittings is a pulpit dating to 1637. Carved timberwork forms the altar and reredos, using panels previously installed at a different location.
