About St Michael

St Michael is a Church of England parish church at North Lane, Othery, in the Bridgwater area of Somerset. It has Grade I protection in recognition of its architectural and historic importance. Problems affecting masonry near the top of the tower have resulted in the church being recorded as heritage at risk.

Its origins lie in the twelfth century, and Othery had a dedicated chaplain by 1203. The settlement gained an independent parish and vicar in 1515. The largely Perpendicular building was altered in the 1400s, then underwent partial reconstruction from 1844 onwards. Work on the Somerset-style tower took place in 1849 and 1853, followed by the addition of pinnacles, niches and carvings of angels and human heads. Five bells survive, spanning the mid-seventeenth century to 1815. Other features include medieval glass from Glastonbury Abbey, Victorian stained glass and a monument commemorating the Chard brothers.
