About St Mary's Church
St Mary's Church is a Church of England parish church on Cannington Road in Bridgwater, Somerset. The church remains part of the Diocese of Bath and Wells and has statutory protection at Grade II*.
A place of worship stood here by the twelfth century, initially with a compact three-bay nave. A gallery was introduced in the early seventeenth century, and a transept followed in 1814 after an unsuccessful expansion proposal in 1791. Richard Carver and Charles Edmund Giles rebuilt most of the structure in 1851, retaining the fifteenth-century tower. Red sandstone is used throughout the building, which includes a central nave, aisles on both sides, a chancel and an adjoining vestry. The three-tiered tower at the west end is strengthened by angled buttresses and ornamented with pinnacles and conspicuous gargoyles. Six bells hang in the tower, all recast in 1914.
