About St Mary's Church

St Mary’s Church stands on St Mary Street in Bridgwater, Somerset, and serves as the town’s principal Church of England parish church. It remains an active place of worship and is recognised as a Major Parish Church for its scale and historical significance. The building holds Grade I listed status and is a prominent local landmark.

A church existed in Bridgwater before 1066, while worship on the present site is documented from 1107. Reconstruction in the Early English Gothic manner began in 1209, followed by extensive enlargement during the 14th and 15th centuries. The nave gained aisles, the western tower was finished by 1318, and the chancel was renewed between 1395 and 1420. A medieval spire, begun in 1367 and supported by substantial corner buttresses, rises to 174 feet and is exceptionally tall for Somerset. Other notable features include large stained-glass windows and a rare, sizeable painting of the Descent from the Cross by an unidentified artist.
