About St George's Church
St George’s Church is an Anglican parish church on Church Road in Wembdon, Bridgwater, Somerset. It serves a benefice in Sedgemoor deanery, under the Diocese of Bath and Wells, and has a conservative evangelical identity within the Church of England. The building is listed at Grade II.
Established in the 1200s, the church passed into the care of Bridgwater’s St John’s Hospital in 1284 as a gift from William Testard, lord of the local manor. The surviving fabric originated mainly in the following two centuries and uses red sandstone, with Perpendicular Gothic detailing and a western tower. Fire caused extensive destruction in March 1868, although the tower endured. J. M. Hay designed the ensuing reconstruction, which lengthened the nave and was supported substantially by the community. Outside, an octagonally based medieval cross survives without its upper section, alongside stocks thought to be from the 1600s.
