About Church of the Holy Cross, Middlezoy

The Church of the Holy Cross, Middlezoy is a Church of England parish church in the Bridgwater area of Somerset. It is protected as a Grade I listed building and belongs to a joint benefice that also includes Othery, Moorlinch, Stawell and Sutton Mallet, in Glastonbury deanery.

Originating in the 13th century, the church was initially a chapel within Sowy parish and became an independent parish by the early 16th century. It was first dedicated to St Lawrence, then St Mary, before receiving its present dedication in 1754. The building comprises a nave, chancel, southern aisle and porch, together with a chapel or vestry on the north side. Its three-stage western tower was added around 1483 and houses six bells, one dating to 1608. Extensive restoration followed designs by Charles Knowles during the 1860s, with additional repairs completed in 1908. Later conservation renewed the tower’s pinnacles and parts of its openwork parapet.
