About Church of St Mary the Virgin
The Church of St Mary the Virgin is an active Church of England parish church on Church Lane in Bridgwater, Somerset. It belongs to the Diocese of Bath and Wells and is listed at Grade I, recognising its exceptional historic and architectural significance.
The building originated during the thirteenth century and retains an ornate wooden roof made in the fifteenth century. Its tower, constructed around 1470, rises in four sections, with pinnacled buttresses, quatrefoil decoration and a battlement-style top. Dragon-like carvings known as hunky punks occupy the tower’s corners, and six bells hang within it. After the Battle of Sedgemoor, roughly 500 soldiers were confined inside the church. W. D. Caroe repaired the roof during the 1930s, with the work paid for by public contributions. A commemorative corner remembers local airmen who died in 1918, 1919 and during the early 1950s.
