About St Daniel's Church, Pembroke
St Daniel’s Church, Pembroke is a disused Grade I listed church in Pembroke Dock, Pembrokeshire. It stands on a hillside about 1.1 kilometres south of Pembroke Castle. The church is now overgrown, although a public footpath continues through its burial ground. It received Grade I status in 1951.
The site predates the Norman period and has long been connected with Saint Deiniol, traditionally regarded as Bangor’s first bishop. Tradition holds that he occupied a hermitage there before a church was erected, while Saint David has also been associated with the place. Pilgrims once visited a well believed to have healing properties. The surviving building is thought to date from the fourteenth or fifteenth century and was repaired in 1780, 1849 and 1893. Constructed from rubble masonry beneath a slate covering, it includes a nave, chancel, spire and west tower. By 1832 it was privately owned, and later served only as a cemetery chapel.
