About St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church is the Church of England parish church serving Carew in Pembrokeshire. It stands in the small settlement of Carew Cheriton, in the south-western part of the parish. The church remains a parish place of worship and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Its earliest surviving fabric is found in the fourteenth-century chancel and transept. The nave, porch and aisles were added during the fifteenth century, while the tower was built around 1500. Its angled buttresses are unusual for churches in Pembrokeshire. The tower once had pinnacles and a spire, but these were removed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries respectively. Nineteenth-century alterations also affected the roofs and windows. The chancel contains tombs associated with the Carew family, including Sir Nicholas de Carew, who died in 1311. A west window installed in 1857 commemorates the Crimean War. The churchyard also contains the Grade I listed Old Mortuary Chapel.
