About Hodgeston Parish Church

Hodgeston Parish Church stands in Hodgeston village, around 1.6 kilometres south-east of Lamphey in Pembrokeshire. This former Church of England place of worship is protected at Grade II* and has been maintained by the Friends of Friendless Churches since 2000.

The nave is believed to be thirteenth-century, while the chancel followed in the next century and the western tower is later. Local limestone walls support slate-covered roofs, and the layout includes a southern porch. After severe deterioration, David Brandon oversaw restoration during the 1850s. New windows were installed, although much of the historic interior survived. The church retains a Norman baptismal font, decorated tile flooring and bells made in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Particularly notable are the chancel’s fourteenth-century double piscina and three clergy seats, enriched with floral, leaf and crocketed carving. Their craftsmanship may have been funded by Henry de Gower, then Bishop of St Davids.
