About Old Mortuary Chapel
Old Mortuary Chapel occupies St Mary’s churchyard at Carew in Pembrokeshire. This medieval structure has Grade I protection and is sometimes called the Oratory locally. Today, it provides space for parish gatherings and Sunday school activities.
Constructed of roughly laid limestone, the two-storey building is aligned from east to west and covered by a slate roof. Outdoor steps lead to its entrance, while the lower level has a vaulted ceiling and probably dates from the fourteenth or fifteenth century. It may originally have stored human bones, although a possible role as a chapel for the dead gave the building its familiar name. Documents identify it as a school in 1625, a function it retained until 1872. It became part of the national school system in 1846 and could receive up to 116 pupils. Other features include a sealed former window and an outdoor memorial to John Relly, a pioneering Calvinist Methodist figure who died in 1777.
