About St Peter's Church, Letwell
St Peter’s Church, Letwell is an active Church of England parish church in the Worksop area of Nottinghamshire. It belongs to the Diocese of Sheffield and shares a benefice with the churches at Firbeck and Woodsetts. Services take place each Sunday, alternating between Matins and Evensong. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building, while its churchyard is designated as a Grade III botanical site.
Founded in about 1375 by John Mauleverer, the church has undergone several substantial changes. Henry Gally Knight of Firbeck Hall funded a major rebuilding in 1820, but a boiler fire in 1867 destroyed most of that work. The medieval tower and the vestry survived, and a Victorian nave and apse were subsequently built with support from Sir Thomas White, whose daughters provided much of the interior decoration. Music is still played on a nineteenth-century Estey harmonium rather than a pipe organ.
